Research and Development

The research activities in the Department of Prosthetics and Orthotics are centered on developing technologies that improve the quality of prosthetic and orthotic care. Our students are exposed to an interdisciplinary approach that allows them to collaborate with clinicians and researchers from across the university. They participate in a research-intensive curriculum, which includes statistical methods; the design of a research project; an informed consent process; and data collection, analysis, and synthesis. Students in both the BS/MSOP and Hybrid MSOP track are able to present their findings at national peer reviewed conferences.


The Committee is responsible for coordinating the various prosthetics and orthotics research programs sponsored by the Veterans Administration, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, the Army, the Navy, etc; for keeping these sponsoring agencies advised of the scope and progress of the program; and for insuring that successful new devices and techniques are promptly available to schools of prosthetics and orthotics for inclusion in their curricula. The Committee also works to determine areas where further research is required and to stimulate the initiation of such studies.
